Within a year or two of living a few blocks from the Atlantic, most people notice the same thing: a fine brown speckle on the stainless of a range front, a hood canopy, a control panel bezel or an outdoor grill cabinet. It looks like rust and people assume the metal has failed.
It usually has not. The industry name for it is tea staining, and it is a surface phenomenon.
What is actually happening
Stainless steel is corrosion resistant because chromium in the alloy forms a thin, self-repairing oxide film — the passive layer. That film is what does the work, not the bulk metal.
Chloride ions attack that film locally. Salt aerosol lands on the surface, absorbs moisture from humid air, and forms a concentrated droplet that sits there. Under the droplet the passive layer breaks down in a spot, iron in the alloy oxidises, and you get a brown mark. Rinse the chloride off before the film is breached and nothing happens at all. Leave it through enough wet-dry cycles and the spot becomes a pit, and a pit does not polish out.
Three things make it worse:
- Distance from the water. Deposition drops sharply over the first blocks. The numbered-street core of Jacksonville Beach and the ocean blocks of Atlantic and Neptune Beach are in the steep part of that curve.
- Surfaces that never get rinsed. Rain washes an exposed outdoor surface. It does not wash a kitchen hood, and it does not wash the underside of a grill lid.
- Surface finish. A brushed finish holds deposit in the grain. A smoother, cleaner surface sheds it. This is also why a scratched panel stains faster than an intact one right beside it.
What it is not
It is not a manufacturing defect and it is not the grade being wrong. Even good marine-appropriate stainless will tea stain in a coastal kitchen if it is never cleaned. The alloy determines how fast, not whether.
It is also not something to attack with the strongest thing under the sink.
Taking it off without making it worse
The order that works:
- Wash with warm water and a mild detergent, wiping with the grain. On a large fraction of cases that is the whole job, because the deposit has not yet breached anything.
- If marks remain, use a proprietary stainless cleaner rated for the finish, again with the grain, then rinse with clean fresh water and dry. Rinsing matters more than the product. Cleaner left to dry on the surface is just another deposit.
- For established staining, a purpose-made stainless restorer or a fine non-metallic pad used with the grain will lift it. Accept that you are refinishing the surface, so blend across the whole panel rather than working one patch.
What to avoid, permanently:
- Steel wool and steel brushes. They embed carbon-steel particles that rust in place and seed new staining. This is the single most common way people create a problem that was not there.
- Chlorine bleach and any chloride-bearing cleaner. You are adding the exact ion that caused the mark.
- Abrasives across the grain. The scratch traps deposit and stains faster next time.
The interval that actually works
For an indoor range front, rangetop bullnose or hood canopy in a house within a few blocks of the beach: a proper wash and dry roughly monthly. For an outdoor grill cabinet or an exterior blower housing: a fresh-water rinse and dry every couple of weeks in the windy season, and always after a storm has driven spray inland.
That is not a lot of work, and it is the difference between a surface you clean and a surface you eventually replace.
