Which page should I read if the symptom is not listed?

Start with the appliance rather than the symptom: the page for your range, hood, cooktop, wall oven, steam oven or outdoor grill sets out the faults in the order we find them. If none of it matches, describe what the appliance does in the order it does it when you call. The sequence is usually the diagnosis.

Do you charge more for a harder fault?

No. The diagnostic is $80 whatever the appliance and however long the fault takes to find, and it covers the drive. What varies is the repair, which is written down after the panel is off. Corrosion moves that number more than the symptom does, which is why it is not quoted over the phone.

Can you tell from the symptom whether it is worth repairing?

Often, yes. A single failed part on a built-in that is sized to its cabinet opening is usually worth doing. A stack of failures — a corroded blower housing behind a tired motor, or a board failing in an opening that will cook the next one too — is where we say so, take the diagnostic and leave.
